pixelwar FAQ

Quick answers. More time to conquer.

01Getting started

The essentials before your first match.

What is pixelwar?

A free browser territory conquest game. Expand across a map, manage troops and choose when to attack, defend or cooperate. You can play multiplayer or practise against bots. Start with How to play.

Is it free, and do I need to install anything?

Playing is free and requires no download. The game runs in a modern browser with JavaScript enabled. Mouse and touch controls are supported. On supported phones, you can add it to your home screen.

Do I need an account?

You can enter a name and play as a guest. Sign in to keep your personal rank, badges and clan membership across sessions and devices. Guest play does not create a saved account rank.

Where do I find the tutorial?

Open Single player and find the Learn to play card, then select Start the tutorial. The desktop How to play menu button takes you there. Two practice missions are available in the same card. The written guide explains the controls without starting a match.

Are all opponents human?

No. Solo practice uses bots. Multiplayer can also include automated opponents, including AI players that fill lobby seats. The number of opponents is not a count of human visitors.

Which maps can I play?

The catalog contains Thronelands, World, Mars with Water and Europe. Multiplayer rotates maps; solo practice lets you choose. The map guide shows each board and explains coastlines, land connections and useful opening choices.

02Playing a match

Spawns, combat and staying connected.

How do I choose my starting position?

During spawn selection, click or tap land before the on-screen countdown ends. You may change your choice during that window. The duration varies by match. Crowded or invalid selections may be moved to a legal nearby position or replaced with an assigned start. You are not restricted to clicking inside the visual marker.

Why can I not attack or send a boat?

A land attack needs a border with the target and enough troops. You cannot attack your own territory or an ally. A boat needs a reachable landing target and a valid sea route from your land. Use the target menu to see the actions currently available. If you are eliminated or catching up after reconnecting, orders may be unavailable.

Why did my remaining territory suddenly turn neutral?

A badly reduced territory can collapse before every last pixel is captured. The game compares your remaining land with a reference based on your earlier size, subject to its collapse limits. Remaining land then becomes unclaimed. Having a few pixels left does not always keep you alive.

What happens if I leave or lose connection?

The match keeps running while you are disconnected. Return to the lobby and use Reconnect when it is offered. The game restores your seat and catches up before you can issue orders. A brief connection interruption can also reconnect automatically.

Returning depends on the match and your seat still being available. Winning members keep their personal point share even if they were eliminated, disconnected or AFK.

03Alliances & clans

Find a free place and support your side.

Can I play with friends?

A clan gives your group persistent membership and clan chat. Clan parties let the leader queue members together for multiplayer. Check the party and match status before joining; a party is not a private match.

How do alliances work?

An alliance is a group formed during a match, separate from permanent clan membership. On your own territory, use the alliance action to open recruitment. Eligible players can apply or be invited; the other side must accept. Recruitment stays on until you press the alliance action again to stop it. Unanswered requests still expire, and repeated requests have cooldowns.

Allied players cannot attack one another and can donate troops. Membership has a match-dependent capacity: a clan-led alliance has a different limit from a solo alliance. The recruitment marker shows occupied places / maximum places to other players too. For example, 1/5 means the leader plus four free places; 3/5 leaves two places; 5/5 is full. Eliminated members stay in the alliance, remain listed with 0 territory, and occupy their places until the match ends. The menu explains when recruitment is blocked.

A clan recruits through its highest-ranked clan member present in the match, with a tie resolved by the game. It cannot be recruited into somebody else's alliance, and a clan that is too large cannot recruit. Ordinary members cannot recruit on behalf of their alliance. Manual leaving is currently disabled, so choose partners carefully.

What does donating cost?

The donation tax starts at 90% and falls over the first 90 seconds to 10%, where it stays. Before capacity limits, sending 1,000 troops at the start delivers 100; after 90 seconds it delivers 900. A recipient cannot exceed Max Troops. Check the preview before sending: a full recipient cannot receive more, and you are charged only for the transfer that fits.

What is the donation coin above a player?

It marks a player who should receive troop support. You can mark yourself or an eligible ally using the donation signal. The call can reach clanmates and alliance members; signal permissions and mutes still apply.

The marker is a request, not an automatic transfer. Tapping an eligible ally's coin sends your selected troop percentage. Marking yourself asks others for support; it does not let you donate troops to yourself.

04Winning & rewards

Match endings and how your points are counted.

How does a match end?

A match has no fixed time limit. It ends with victory when surviving players have no hostile side left to fight. This can be one player, a clan or an alliance.

A successful peace vote can also end the match. When no side is dominant, the vote can offer a draw with no winner. Otherwise it can award victory to the leading side. Read the vote panel before agreeing: calling a vote does not automatically cast your vote, and voting yes does not necessarily mean you win.

Peace voting is restricted early in a match and to eligible callers. Votes are weighted by territory rather than being a simple head count; the required support varies with the match and vote type. The game can also open a vote when one side is close to controlling the map. A failed or expired vote lets play continue.

How do personal ranks work?

There are 55 ranks, from Recruit to Pixel Legend. Personal points accumulate from eligible, server-verified multiplayer wins. Losing does not subtract points.

The match point pool is divided between winning-side members, rounded up for each member. With 100 counted players:

Personal points for a 100-player eligible match
Winning membersPoints each
1100
334
520

This applies to clans and in-match alliances. Eliminated members can still share their side's victory. Guest and AI-takeover seats still use a share, but receive no personal points; their shares are not redistributed.

The counted player total can differ from the lobby total: engine bots are excluded, and duplicate accounts or public addresses are deduplicated. At least two counted players and a counted opponent outside the winning side are required. Draws and regular solo practice do not award rank points.

Are clan points the same as personal points?

No. Personal points belong to your account; clan points belong to a separate competitive ladder. A qualifying clan win uses the full counted match size to calculate the clan award, rather than dividing that award by the number of clan members.

An in-match alliance victory does not award clan points, even when a clan is part of the alliance. Clan awards also have eligibility and cooldown rules. The clan ladder redistributes a shared pool, so a clan's total can decrease when other clans win.

Does completing the tutorial give points?

Completing all required tutorial tasks earns +10 lifetime personal rank points once per account, after verification. Repeating the tutorial and completing practice missions do not award the bonus again. The tutorial does not award clan points.

What are badges?

Seven badges are currently earnable, with bronze, silver and gold tiers: Map Conqueror, Hot Streak, Veteran, Warmonger, Comeback Kid, Night Owl and Iron Discipline. They track map wins, consecutive wins, lifetime wins, games played, comebacks, night wins and consecutive days played. Your profile shows the requirements and progress. Badges do not add rank points.

05Beta

Feature availability.

What does Beta mean?

pixelwar is still being developed. Features and balance may change, and some social features are temporarily unavailable. This page describes the current rules.

Why do Global, Recruit and DMs say Coming soon?

Global chat, recruitment chat and direct messages are temporarily disabled during Beta. You cannot send or read messages in those channels while they are disabled. Clan chat remains available.
